Piestewa Peak - Summit Trail
Hike Description:
Looking for a beautiful scenic hike that will satisfy the outdoor craving? Located in the heart of Phoenix, The Summit Trail at Piestewa Peak is a somewhat easy hike for well-conditioned hikers and offers spectacular views of the thriving metropolis below. We will meet at the trailhead, look for the guide wearing a backpack with yoga mats, and a ASU umbrella. He or she will have your cell number in case of any issue.
Like all hikes we do 15 minutes of easy poses to prepare you for your hike. The 1.2-mile trail gains 1200 feet in very short time. Normally it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the top depending on one’s physical shape. If you are feeling full of energy, we can summit the peak and take photos, but if you are feeling like more in a yoga mode, we can stop ¾ of the way up and start practicing Yoga and Chi Gong, not worrying about reaching the top.
The bottom line is we want you to have a fun time and we don’t want you to stress about reaching the Summit. If we do Summit, we will come back down a ¼ of the way to spend 45 minutes practicing Yoga and Chi Gong, then we hike down for 20 to 30 minutes.
The top Piestewa Peak was originally known as Squaw Peak and was renamed in 2004 in honor of Lori Piestewa, a Hopi woman who was the first Native American woman to die in an American war. She was killed in the Iraq Conflict. Total time is 2 hours, and total distance 2.4 miles. If you are on a tight schedule, we can spend less time with either yoga or hiking, again it’s your call. In the summertime we recommend 6 am hikes or Sunset still maybe being 110 degrees. Bring a gallon of water in the evening per person less in the morning.
As usual your guide will meet you at the trail head wearing a backpack with yoga mats attached and holding an ASU Umbrella.
